Storm shelter

Lowest floor, interior room, away from windows

That is the rule when a dedicated shelter isn't within reach. When one is, the useful thing to know is how long it takes to get there from where you actually spend your time, and whether it will be open. Capacity and hours vary by city, and some shelters open only once an emergency is declared.

What to do

  1. Check this shelter's hours, and whether it opens on declaration only.
  2. Walk the route from home, work, or school and time it.
  3. Pick a fallback: the lowest interior room you can reach, away from windows and exterior walls.
  4. Make sure everyone in your household knows both.

Is there one of these near you?

A ResQ‑R badge on one of these carries this same guidance, plus where that particular one is and who looks after it. Point your phone’s camera at the Dalmatian’s spots — no app, no account. See how it works.
