Most home fires start where the cooking happens. A home extinguisher typically lasts ten to twelve years, and the gauge tells you whether it is still pressurised - the needle should sit in the green band.
What to do
- Check the gauge. The needle should sit in the green.
- If it is a dry-chemical unit, give it a shake so the powder doesn't settle.
- Check the manufacture date and replace at ten to twelve years.
- Keep one within easy reach of the kitchen, but not directly above the stove.
- Replace it before it expires rather than waiting for it to fail.
