Smoke has a way of taking the exit you were counting on. Counting the doors between you and your nearest two exits takes a few seconds, and it is the difference between deciding under pressure and already knowing. Exit signs are battery-backed and required by code to stay lit through a power cut.
What to do
- Find your nearest exit and count the doors between here and there.
- Find a second exit in a different direction.
- Walk the route all the way outside, not just to the door - some doors open onto hallways that go nowhere useful.
- Report an exit sign that is dark, or a route that is blocked.
